Today I connected my Kindle Paperwhite to my PC and it seemed like the connection was flaky. It constantly turned its screen on and off. I figured - no big deal, as long as the battery was charging. It turned out to be a big deal, as at one point it just said "Your Kindle Needs Repair" and indicated that it was Repair Code 2.
As in most cases Google turned out to be the best "Amazon Technician" ever. I googled the Repair code and ended up on this page: http://www.reddit.com/r/kindle/comments/2xojx2/how_to_fix_your_paperwhite_if_it_says_your_kindle/
In short it said that one could fix the problem without much hassle, only at the price of losing the local stored books. Well, not a very good feeling, but all the books I have been reading lately are also in the Amazon Cloud, so I figured that it was my best bet. Turns out it worked. Here is a short description of what I did:
- Connected the Kindle to my PC.
- Created a file called "DO_FACTORY_RESET" on my PC Desktop. Needed it to be ready, since my kindle was constantly terminating the USB connection with the PC and I had only small windows when I could see it as a hard drive where I could write stuff.
- Connected the Kindle via USB.
- Copied the file in the main directory of the kindle. Basically it is the first thing you see when you mount the device and open it.
- Reset it via the power button (held it maybe for about 10 seconds, but I guess no more than 4-5 seconds should suffice).
The Kindle then did a factory reset and now I have confirmed it working. Not sure for how long it will last. It might be a software glitch with a newer version - with the new Paperwhite and all. Who knows, anyway I hope this was helpful.
Cheers,
Konstantin
